[tim-janik/beast] ../bse/bseenums.hh:7:10: fatal error: bse/bseapi_interfaces.hh: No such file or directory (#66)

Gnome - Beast mailing list

I can't figure out how that should happen, or why it isn't happening.

Here's the build output:

Re: [tim-janik/beast] ../bse/bseenums.hh:7:10: fatal error: bse/bseapi_interfaces.hh: No such file or directory (#66)

Gnome - Beast mailing list

I see a couple issues on your system before compilation even starts. Here're some questions about your setup:

  • what kind of system are you building on, why are many tools under /nix/ ?

  • why don't you have pwd or file?
./configure: line 3641: /bin/pwd: No such file or directory
./configure: line 8076: /usr/bin/file: No such file or directory

  • what gcc do you have, so -static doesn't work?
checking if gcc static flag -static works... no

  • can you get npm to work on your system? it's needed for ebeast atm and will become a hard requirement in the future.
    checking for npm... no

Then, configure is executed multiple times on your system, maybe due to missing pwd, in any case that's an indication that something's fishy already.

In reply to this post by Gnome - Beast mailing list

I'm using NixOS, which has all pkgs under /nix/store/.
It builds everything in an environment with only the pkgs that are declared as dependencies.
I have gcc 7.3.0; I don't know why -static doesn't work.
I can probably get npm to work, but I haven't looked in to it much yet.

I don't know why configure is executed twice, sorry.
That doesn't help much, does it?

Hi Magnetophon.
I've read up a bit about NixOs. Because it installs everything in their own paths, hardcoded paths in other packages won't work well there. I'm happy to fix that in Beast, but it sounds like there's a fair bit of work involved. So I suggest we change our work setup for that. I recommend the following:

  • You start to build Git master, so you get build fixes immediately once we've resolved an issue.
  • You join us on #beast on irc.gimp.org, so we can quickly go back and forth on new issues you're running into (I'm on CEST btw, usually available throughout the day and often night hours).
  • Once you've gotten a successful build going, I can make another release that incorporates those fixes, so you can get off of master again (which is alpha quality at best).

Think that could work for you?

@magnetophon, I'm not sure how exactly I can be of further help here.

From what I understand, NixOS requires a lot of file path patching, from the output of configure, to paths hardcoded in Makefiles, and paths in scripts.

At the very least, you'll need /usr/bin/env.
I'll happily take patches like this:

-#!/usr/bin/python2.7
+#!/usr/bin/env python2.7

And similar things could be applied to configure.ac, but paths hardcoded in the generated configure due to macros from /usr/share/autoconf/... are not under Beast's control. That simply requires significant porting effort on NixOS and should arguably be fixed/adapted by the NixOS autoconf + automake packages. If that was fixed on NixOS, it'd be much easier to simply build Beast via autogen.sh from git release tags, using autoconf and automake from NixOS instead of paths hardcoded in tarbals for regular unix systems.
Our git tags are guaranteed to match the released tarballs, so you'd get the same release code base there, but with fewer hard coded paths. Of course that requires a working git setup, including git log and git describe, and unfortunately NixOS intentionally doesn't even provide that for package builds. At least not easily... ;-(

With every package in NixOS having their own bin/ directory, I also wonder how NixOS wants to scale up to supporting hundreds or thausands of package installations...

In any case, the paths have to be adjusted first (though I suspect that to be a pretty fragile undertaking that could break packages fairly often). If that's done the Makefile rules should also properly work so file generation rules will be properly carried out.

I'm always on IRC of course, but is there a point in keeping this bug report open?

@tim-janik Thanks for looking in to this.

Yes, I'll close the issue now, cause I'm not likely toput in the needed time either atm.

I do want to correct some misunderstandings:

From what I understand, NixOS requires a lot of file path patching

Most packages don't need any manual patching, but some do.

At the very least, you'll need /usr/bin/env.

NixOS has that, so changing shebangs upstream would help a lot.

but paths hardcoded in the generated configure due to macros from /usr/share/autoconf/... are not under Beast's control. That simply requires significant porting effort on NixOS and should arguably be fixed/adapted by the NixOS autoconf + automake packages.

I don't know enough about autoconf macros to answer this, sorry.
I do suspect this isn't the first time it comes up, and NixOS has some plumbing to deal with it.

Of course that requires a working git setup, including git log and git describe, and unfortunately NixOS intentionally doesn't even provide that for package builds.

I wouldn't say it's intentional, but rather a side effect.
The effect is the same though...

With every package in NixOS having their own bin/ directory, I also wonder how NixOS wants to scale up to supporting hundreds or thausands of package installations...

This is not an issue, since no duplicate packages are ever stored. Also: all packages symlink to their dependencies. Or did I misunderstand you?

Thanks again for your time!

Unfortunately, I'm having the same problem on GNU Guix (also a functional package management system like Nix).

I only changed these things:

  • removed the build-time dependency on git
  • removed the very strict xmllint version check (we have 20908 instead of 20901)
  • removed the pkg-config test for libmad, which does not provide .pc files by default
...

How should bse/bseapi_interfaces.hh be generated? Maybe this is just an ordering problem as other files are generated?

I disabled parallel building (so we run just plain make) to avoid possible race conditions.

Hey @rekado, please create a new issue for this, so it's a) about GUIX, and b) we're discussing stuff on an open issue ;-)
If possible, it could help if you join #beast on irc.gimp.org, since I need a bit of hand holding with understanding packaging issues around GUIX.
